A new roof should protect a home for years to come, but on a distinctive property, the finished roof should also complement the architecture of the house.
That combination of performance, craftsmanship and appearance was an important part of this recent full shingle replacement completed by Sheppard Exteriors in Penn Valley, Pennsylvania.
For this project, the homeowners selected CertainTeed Grand Manor luxury shingles in Gatehouse Slate, paired with Integrity Roof System accessories and several custom-fabricated copper details.
A Luxury Shingle Designed for a Distinctive Home
CertainTeed Grand Manor is a luxury architectural shingle designed to recreate much of the depth and character associated with natural slate roofing.
For this Penn Valley home, Gatehouse Slate works particularly well with the existing exterior. The dark, dimensional roof provides an attractive contrast against the lighter stucco, brick accents and existing trim while preserving the traditional character of the property.
The result is a substantial architectural appearance without taking attention away from the home's original design.
Custom Copper W-Valleys
One of the most noticeable details in the completed project is the use of custom copper W-valleys.
Roof valleys handle significant amounts of water as runoff from adjoining roof planes is directed toward the gutters. Properly designed and installed valley systems are therefore an important component of the overall roofing system.
For this project, custom copper was used to create both a functional drainage detail and an architectural accent that complements the traditional appearance of the home.
As the copper naturally ages, it will develop its own distinctive patina while continuing to provide long-term protection.
Custom-Bent Copper Chimney Flashing
The chimney areas also received custom-bent copper flashing.
Roof penetrations and transitions around chimneys require careful flashing because these areas can become vulnerable to water intrusion when they are not properly integrated into the surrounding roofing system.
Fabricating the copper specifically for the home's chimney configuration allowed the new flashing to follow the roofline closely while providing a clean, finished appearance.
Finishing the Roof With Color-Matched Drip Edge
Attention to detail continued along the perimeter of the roof.
Instead of allowing the new roofing components to visually compete with the existing exterior, custom-made color-matched drip edge was used to coordinate with the home's trim.
It is a relatively small detail, but it can make a significant difference in the appearance of a finished roof. The roof, trim and exterior architecture now work together as one cohesive design.
More Than a Shingle Replacement
This Penn Valley project demonstrates why a complete roofing installation involves considerably more than choosing a shingle.
A properly planned roofing system brings together shingles, underlayment, ventilation, flashing, valleys, edge protection and numerous finishing details. On a home with multiple rooflines, dormers, valleys and chimney transitions, those details become particularly important.
By combining CertainTeed Grand Manor luxury shingles, Integrity Roof System accessories and custom copper fabrication, Sheppard Exteriors was able to create a roofing system designed to protect the home while respecting its architectural character.
